Radio Spotlight: The Black Lodge

KPSQ features several programs produced by local community members. In this blog post, we shine a light on The Black Lodge, a local show produced and hosted by Mike.

Tell us about your radio show. What is it about?
“The Black Lodge” is a mix of deep cut classic rock and deep alternative rock from the 1960s up thru the early 1990s. It airs live 8-10 pm Thursday nights and the same show replays the following Tuesday night 10-midnight.

When did your show start airing on KPSQ?
“The Black Lodge” was one of the first live shows on KPSQ and has been airing since May of 2016. This is actually the SECOND run of the show. The original show aired from September 2001-December 2002 on KXUA. The original version of the show was hosted by my buddy Tim Dodd and was an all progressive rock format. I began coming on as a co-host in the fall of ’01….Tim moved away in August of ’02 and I kept the show going as long as I could at the time….I DID alter the format at that time and started to play classic alternative mixed in with progressive rock….I thought that it would be cool to throw in Devo & Depeche Mode into the Yes/Pink Floyd/Genesis mix!!!!!….. How did I get the show on KPSQ????…. I picked up a copy of the “Fayetteville Free Weekly” one afternoon at the Springdale Library and there was an article about KPSQ……I was like “who are these people???’….I went to a meeting and the rest is history!!!

What do you like about doing radio?
I have been a radio nut since about the age of 8 when I used to listen to the great Casey Kasem on “American Top 40” Sunday afternoons 2-6 pm on the old “BJ-105” Orlando (my hometown)…..I was always obsessed as a kid with how a radio worked….how was that signal coming in…..who was that person that I was hearing on the other side of the microphone????…… I have actually been involved in and out of radio since 2001 when I started out as a board operator/weekend news announcer for Newstalk 1030 KFAY….I produced a number of shows there (most notably the old “Sports Rap with Chuck Barrett”)from September 2001-June 2004……I love doing my show because I have a total background in music (BME Music Education UofArkansas class of 2000) and I want to expose some great music to Northwest Arkansas that I hope people will hear and enjoy…

Any good movie, book, or music recommendations?
…when it comes to a good book….read “The Stand” or “It” from Stephen King…..when it comes to music….you cannot ever go wrong with The Floyd or Zappa…..I love Mob movies…I can watch “Godfather II” over & over again…..I also love old John Wayne movies, especially the later ones that he did in the ’70s before he died…good stuff…I also recommend re-runs of “Miami Vice”…that show blew me away as a kid and definitely shaped my musical tastes…
